Jazz up your week with CHICAGO at the Moonlight Amphitheatre

Show Review

By Zulema G, San Marcos-Vista Macaroni Kid January 30, 2020

Last week was a crazy week. Work was busy, home life was busy, and of course, mom life is always busy. You know how it is right?! What got me through it was knowing that at the end of the week my sister and I were going to see Chicago at the Moonlight Amphitheatre and we were going to have a few hours of just girl time. I love Chicago, this last show was my third time enjoying it live, but the venue and the production company were new to me. I had heard so many great things about both and I was so excited! This was also my sister's first time seeing the show and it's always fun to introduce someone you love to something you love.

The show was exactly what I expected it to be: FABULOUS! Not for the faint of heart, Chicago is a story set in the 1920's and is a story of murder, booze, adultery, corruption, dancing, and some really great jazz numbers. The production company and the cast of actors not only did this musical justice but they added their very own flavor to this classic. It was obvious the cast had fun with this production because we had fun watching them. It was a world class show here in our very own backyard and that was enough for me to decide this was a production company I want to keep supporting.

What impressed me even more than the show (and you heard me say how fabulous it was right?) was the venue itself. If you have not been to the Moonlight Amphitheatre, add it to your bucket list of places to go before the year ends. This outdoor venue really lends itself to be the perfect setting for a romantic night out, a girls night, or a family outing. My sister and I shared conversations over wine as the sun was setting behind the theater and as we huddled closer in the crisp fresh air. You will find both stadium seating (the venue is small enough that no matter where you sit you will have a great view of the stage) and lawn seating with lawn chairs included in your admission fee. Many couples and groups of friends walked in with their own dinner picnics and small portable dinner tables (now on my shopping list for our next amphitheatre visit). And if you don't want to worry about cooking or buying dinner or snacks you can always dine at the full-service Luna Cafe on location or at the Luna Cafe Snack Shack to take food back to your seating area (try the Beer Mac & Cheese). You will find many Wine (by the glass or bottle) and Beer options as well as other non-alcoholic drinks. The Moonlight Amphitheatre has everything you need for a proper night out!

Thankfully you can still see catch Chicago as it runs from September 12th-29th, with tickets ranging from $17-$57. This is an adult-themed show so best to take your favorite adult with you, leave the kiddos at home for this one. Trust me, it will be worth it! However, if you want to take your kids to enjoy this jewel of a venue, there are still plenty of opportunities to do so. Check out one (or all) of the following shows with the whole family and add these events to your calendar of Family Fun!

Beauty and The Beast October 12-20, Tickets $12-$22

Family Movie Night: Coco + Pre-show Dia de Los Muertos November 3 Activities, Tickets $5-$10
